Over the course of the last month, Leonard Balsera has been writing Fate Core.

He’s been doing a bunch of other stuff, too, but still, we’re on track for about 10-15k words this month, and more in the months to come. He’s juggling Fate Core duties together with his other Evil Hat responsibilities (and other life/freelancing concerns), but the progress is steady.

I’m excited.

And I thought you’d like to know. πŸ™‚

  1. Color me excited!!!

  2. of course we are!

  3. *Joins the excited crowd*

  4. Ok… this is quite cool.

  5. Fortunately, this one won’t take five years to make. πŸ˜‰

  6. That’s certainly good news and I can’t wait till I hold the hardcover (?) in my hands:)
(btw will this render Strands of Fate obsolete?)

  7. I have no opinion on how it’ll interact with third party Fate derivatives. Won’t know until it’s done, and even then, it’s on those 3PP’s to figure out whether the product works with their branch. πŸ™‚

  8. Well, if you ever need proofreaders/editors/playtesters/trained game monkeys to help, let me know. πŸ™‚ *wink wink nudge nudge*

  9. Totally psyched!

    And… thank you!

  10. Awesome news. Can’t wait.

  12. Great! I’m really excited! I hope Leonard have a happy writting. Thanks guys.

  13. Excellent! I am really looking forward to this and hoping it will be digest sized, available in softback and hopefully cheap enough that it can pull a Savage Worlds Explorer Edition and become almost an impulse purchase for people πŸ™‚

  14. Very happy to hear this is in the pipeline, guys. Maybe this time I can write a review of it and *NOT* forget to put Leonard Balsera’s name in as a/the writer.

I’ll be waiting for this one.

  15. Sweet! Looking forward to the first release!

  16. How does FATE core compare to FreeFATE?

  17. Free Fate is a hack originated by a third party.

Fate Core will be a refinement and extension of the main sequence Fate created by Evil Hat.

  18. Yep, I imagine Fate Core will provide more tools, dials and extras to support a more generic system. And it will no doubt use Fudge dice and benefit from the developments in Dresden etc. Free FATE was only ever meant to be a way to give people a chance to try out FATE without buying and reading a big tome like SotC (yes I know its digest sized but I was put off by its size).

Basically, I put together Free FATE but I am excited about FATE Core and can’t wait to make it my “go to” generic system πŸ™‚

  19. Can I Pre Order Now!

  20. fred and Grant, thanks for the explanations! (and Grant, thanks for FreeFATE, btw! πŸ™‚ )

  21. Well, thanks to you and your site, it is 2 in the morning and I’m still not in bed.

    Thanks. πŸ™‚

I remember FUDGE from way back in the day, and always liked it, but not quite right for me. Sometime during this on-again/off-again love affair with gaming, I hit on HeroQuest and fell hard for it. Over time, that has waned, but I still am deeply in love with the “name your own abilities” aspect. I always dismissed FATE – despite the lure of Aspects – because of the pre-determined skill lists, etc.

Reading you guys has made me re-assess. Pointing out the trappings core, that you can get there from Aspects perhaps, or from other modes, etc.. I think I need to get me a version, find some damn forums of people who have hacked so I can learn from them, and wait expectantly for FATE Core.

First, I should get some sleep, though.

Awesome stuff to watch your brains work, guys.

  22. I know never to ask Evil Hat for a “when”, but I’d love to see an update on where Core Fate’s at!

  23. We’re well over the halfway point on the text, but there’s only one Lenny and he’s on more than one project. We’re hoping the text will be ready for our editor squad in the January/February timeframe. No telling how long that phase will take once we get there.

  24. That’s fantastic. I don’t know if there’s any beta playtesting planned, but I run a lot of FATE (mostly Spirit, but learning Dresden), so if there is, count me in.

  25. I am so excited to get my hands on Fate Core as soon as I can. This is going to be fun once it is released.
